Windows: Is staring at the progress meter when you're copying or downloading a file too boring for you? How about if elevator music instantly started playing whenever you start one of these file operations? Instant Elevator Music can do that.

All you have to do is select which apps you want—there's also blanket choice for anything that has a progress bar—and music will automatically start up. There are options for ignoring certain apps, or knowing when you're playing music so as to not be annoying.

Instant Elevator Music is nothing mindblowing or all that productive, but it should be fun for a little while before you eventually uninstall it.

When you have a large file or group of large files that you want to send to someone, but you don't want to clog up your Dropbox account and you don't have time to just drive over to your friend's house with a USB drive, Justbeamit is a new web service that lets you upload a file, get a private link, and send it to a friend. When they open it, a private peer-to-peer download session will start and they'll grab the file from you over the web.

Justbeamit makes the process easy on purpose: all you have to do is drag and drop the file you want to share into your browser window, and the webapp will give you the URL you can send to your friend. You'll be able to watch the progress while your file is uploaded, and when it's finished, you'll see a "waiting" indicator, meaning the service is waiting for the recipient to download the file. When they visit the link, Justbeamit opens the connection between you and the recipient and lets them download the file.

The service is dead simple to use, and doesn't require that you sign up for an account of any kind. The only downside is that because the service is little more than a gateway, the sender can't leave the page until the download is complete, and once both parties leave the page, the transfer link is useless, so if there's a problem, you'll have to start over. Even so, the service works and is incredibly easy to use.

NameDropper Batch Renames Files and Folders in Seconds [Windows Downloads]

Windows: If you've just taken a ton of photos, or you have a bunch of documents that you want to rename so they're in sequential or date order, NameDropper is a Windows utility that lets you drag all of the files you want to rename into one window and process them all with a single click.

To use NameDropper, you'll first have to drag and drop the files you want to rename, and then drag in the name that you want applied to the files. The app will then append incremental numbers in patterns you select. While NameDropper can batch rename images and photos for easy uploading to your favorite photo site, there are other applications that we've mentioned before that can do that as well. If you just want to append a number after each file, Windows can already do that for you. NameDropper is strongest when renaming videos, documents, or other files.

For example, if you're trying to rename a collection of videos you've taken at family events, or television episodes that you've backed up from your own DVDs, the app can help you rename them all and organize them in sequential order, with complex file names and multiple numbers.

update: A number of you have mentioned that the developer is distributing the app through BrotherSoft, which requires you install the Brothersoft Downloader before you can get the program. Keep this in mind if you want to give NameDropper a try (and make sure to uninstall the downloader after installing NameDropper.)
