Windows: Is staring at the progress meter when you're copying or downloading a file too boring for you? How about if elevator music instantly started playing whenever you start one of these file operations? Instant Elevator Music can do that.

All you have to do is select which apps you want—there's also blanket choice for anything that has a progress bar—and music will automatically start up. There are options for ignoring certain apps, or knowing when you're playing music so as to not be annoying.

Instant Elevator Music is nothing mindblowing or all that productive, but it should be fun for a little while before you eventually uninstall it.

If you decide to try Noow, make sure to choose the custom install: if left alone the installer wants to change your browser home page and search preferences. The app is available now for Windows only. The developers promise that Mac and Linux versions are on the way.

Windows/Mac/Linux: Free, open-source application Mielphone is a Frankenstein-y tool for searching, listening to, and downloading music publicly available on the internet (read: pretty much anything).

In a time in which streaming services like Spotify and Rdio are capable of streaming nearly any song you'd like on demand, fewer people are turning to the torrents or web-based MP3 search engines to pirate listen before buying music, but many people still want their tunes to live locally on hard drives. Mielphone lives in the middle of these two groups, allowing file-horders to download any song they can find but still giving them easy access to search giant repositories of publicly available, on-demand music. It's Metro-influenced design is a bit funky and could use some polishing (having to hover your mouse over a few pixels of real estate to navigate is klunky), but a few complaints aside, it's a handy little search, discover, and download tool.

Mielphone also integrates with Last.fm (for scrobbling) and Facebook (for sharing what you're listening to). Despite the Windows-8-inspired interface, It's a free download for all platforms.
